This is the perfect crochet pattern for any season, but perhaps especially for Halloween. This pattern contains instructions for making the top seven cast members from one of the great horror movies of the 70s and 80s: The Shining. Jack, Wendy, and Danny Torrance are here, along with Lloyd, the bartender; Dick Hallorann, the head chef; and the Grady Sisters, aka the creepy girls in the blue dresses who like to hang out in your head, haunting your dreams. When finished, the tallest figure - Jack - stands just under 8 inches tall, while the shortest - Danny - rings in at 5.5 inches.
These figures have been lovingly designed with all kinds of killer details, from Jack's ax to Wendy's bat to Danny's finger, which is our signal that we're about to hear from Tony, the little boy who lives inside his mouth.
This is an intermediate pattern, but only in the sense that you have to do slightly unusual shaping work on pieces like Jack's hair. There are no fancy dance moves required, just sc, HDC, and DC. All decreases are single crochet decreases (sc2tog). Extras are minimal and include jewelry wire (almost any gauge will work), along with scraps of black felt and white felt for making mouths and the Apollo rocket on Danny's sweater. You will need 7 sets of 6mm safety eyes, a G hook, polyfill, and a stitch marker, along with yarn in these colors:
• Caucasian flesh tone, or CFT (pink, beige - whatever you usually use for white skin)
• Brown (a classic chocolate brown)
• Black
• White
• Tan
• Denim blue (or a medium blue, but not royal blue)
• Pale blue
• Sky blue (for the little girls' dresses)
• Navy
• Gray
• Red (a classic fire engine red)
• Burgundy or dark red, for Lloyd's tuxedo jacket
• Gray brown, or any shade that's visibly distinct from your chocolate brown
• Optional: Variegated brown, for Grady sisters' hair (I used Lion Homespun, Barley)
The pattern is 41 pages long because it contains clear instructions and lots of pictures to illustrate any steps that are not the standard round-and-round of amigurumi.
